Solidarity Letter for Burmese Students
You might not see things yet on
the surface, but underground, it's already on fire.
– Y.B. Mangunwijaya
That fire
explodes in Burma, at last. Progressive Students Union of Universitas Indonesia
(SEMAR UI) condemns the atrocities conducted by Burma Authorities to our fellow
Burmese students and youth, as they demonstrated for a better and just
education policy in their country. The bill itself, part of a repressive state
system, aims to impose total control over the education system, including
student organizations, not to mention higher tuition fees. What was once a
peaceful demonstration turned into a chaotic riot because of the repression
used by Burma authorities in order to dismiss the masses.
Freedom is a
mandatory right for every individual in a society. The spirit of the Burmese
reformation brought by Daw Suu Kyi, along with the NLD (National League of
Democracy), was to attempt to build such freedom. However, it seems that the
image of a peaceful and just society is too priceless to be realized by a
single entity. Particularly, when that entity has turned her back on students,
whom are seen as a threat to negotiations between the Party and the military
junta.
Society is a
vague concept and has broad meanings. Alas, social justice within society has
to conceptualize all norms and values involving each individual in society. Thus,
when the students marched on the street, struggling for justice, we know that
something isn’t right in conceptualizing the new face
for Burma. Justice cannot be built through the exclusion of other entities
within the same social structure.
Accordingly,
SEMAR UI whose values are based on social justice and principles of human
rights, denounce the repulsiveness conducted by Burma authorities and police. We certify and demand:
- Support the stuggle of Burmese students
- Calling off the unfair education bill which attempt to eradicate freedom of thought in educational institusion
- The release of ever a hundred Burmese students activist whi were put in jail
- Unity of students all over the world, regionally and internationally, in order to safeguard the nature of education as a tool for the liberation of humanity
